mobmov accused of plagiarism

as if it weren’t enough for gizmodo to call us a subset of the santa cruz drive-in (the nerve!), I just get this e-mail from a guy in germany accusing me of ripping off the idea from them and some other obscure website. I’d pass it off and move on, but it’s rather funny cause its so weird:

Now i would like to know if you have adopted the idea from some german website ( www.undergroundbattle.org ), or i its just that you copied the “Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive In”… – no offense ;D

I hate it when people say “no offense”! Then why did you make it?

ah-eiiii! we’re faaammmoouss!

The blog I read every day just ran an article about the mobile movie! Of course, their facts are a bit wrong (the mobmov was the first mobile movie of the sort they describe, not santa cruz – ehem!), but my goodness! That was so cool to see, so unexpected! To be listed next to the SC GDI is quite an honor.

214 members and growing as I watch. holy carp, this is going to blow up my server. but it will feel *so* good.

The mobmov as a franchise

Recently there’s been a lot of interest in starting up other mobmovs in other areas of the country. I just got an e-mail today from a guy in LA raring to go, and there have been e-mails from people in Minneapolis, San Diego, and Pittsburgh just this past week. I think it’s totally cool to hear that people want to set up their own and bring this thing into wider and wider circles! I think, the more the merrier, I’m happy to help them get going.

But what should new mobmovs be called? Obviously not “branches”… maybe “venues”… but there has to be something more interesting to call them. Ideas?

Looking back and ahead

Here we are, nearing the end of summer. I admit that I am saddened that I didn’t hold more events. This was a busy summer for me, and it would have been hard to run it with me gone. Maybe in the future we can diversify the equipment a little more so others can show mobmovs too.

I’m really excited how well the mobmov has done, how much interest it has generated. I can’t hardly believe that we’re almost up to 150 people on the mailing list! What started as a hair-brained idea from a tinkering geek, turned into something that people really enjoy and talk about. And I don’t even know them. It’s all really encouraging to see this progression.

It seems like yesterday that my friends Ray and Menzies joined me for the first mobmov (before it was the “mobmov”) in the Longs parking lot on University and San Pablo.

What lies in the future? Well, I’ll definitely be running it in the winter-time. It is such a blast to run a mobmov and meet all you cool people, it’s tough not to want to hold one every week! I’d like to get more organized about it in general, so people can somewhat count on a set time. I’m thinking of perhaps the first Thursday of every month, plus a flexible date I will determine during the rest of the month. I’d also like to bring the mobmov into other communities (such as SF) and look into running it at events.

Please e-mail with your comments, ideas, and hopes for the future!

TPS reports and free snacks

Without a doubt this was the best mobmov to date. We had five *packed* cars, lots of interesting people, and a great movie. People also liked the cartoon-movie-intermission-movie format, now executed with some flashy titles and graphics. The new tip jar was well used (thank you!), and the free snacks were appreciated. Thanks to all those came out.

Revisiting the blog

I used to have a blog at the very beginning of the mobmov, but then I accidentally deleted the blog files in an upgrade of the site and never bothered to rebuild it. Well now I come upon the old database and low-and-behold, the old entries. Here they are, copied below. I had to add a few to fill in the gaps, but I will try and be more faithful to blogging events in the future!

Hiatus returned, I want my money back

After much travel and adventure, I return to the mobmov and its now many subscribers. Let’s watch Pulp Fiction! On a sunday! Hmm. Obviously this didn’t work out so well, because not only was I the only one there to watch the entire movie by myself, but I heard from some people that they showed and I wasn’t there. Where was I? Where were you? One thing’s for certain: Sundays no more.

the driver is interviewed – my 15 minutes of fame?

I just went down to the KQED station house today in SF to be interviewed on Weekend America on NPR. It was a really cool experience, but I was really nervous – unsure what they would ask me or what to expect. The booth was amazing though! Full of all sorts of expensive shiny technology. You never know how quiet things can be until you enter into a radio studio. It’s like the walls eat sound. Amazing.

There was this really cute radio tech behind the glass and I really wish I had the chance to meet her, but she left before the interview was done. Her smile made me more at ease. If you’re her, look me up!

So I popped on the headphones and had a chat with the radio host in LA. It wasn’t live, thank god, so whenever I mixed up words or said something wrong I could say, “let’s redo that” (an ability that would be nice in real life, eh?). They also seemed to repeat questions just to get me the phrase it in the right way. The interview ended up taking about 1/2 hour, but the show itself only featured me for about a minute. Even still, it’s amazing to me to think that this little project of mine has grown so popular so fast. What’s next, Good Morning America? 😉

New title suggestion: Mobbie Movie

My friend Menzies, the guy who originally came up with the term “Mobile Movie” suggested that I change it to “Mobbie Movie”. Mobmov is indeed a bit hard to pronounce accurately, and converting would make it easier to say. However, I’ve already created the logos and animations, and it would be a shame to have to re-create that. Besides, I like the connotations provided by “Mobile” and “Mob”, which might be lost in “Mobbie”. Who knows, if enough people start talking about it, they may just start calling it the Mobbie Movie. Fine by me.

First showing: American graffiti (I’m nervous!)

I really didn’t know what to expect on this our first public mobmov. We already have about 50 people on the mailing list and I didn’t know if 1) any, or 2) all, would show up. The showing a few nights before garnered no unknowns, so who knew? We held it up at the Lawrence Hall of Science, and we filled the parking lot. No kidding. Only three cars showed up at first (two couples I didn’t know plus my friend Menzies), but little by little more people trickled in. At one point we had 8 cars in the parking lot, from seniors on an evening drive, to a car full of teenagers looking for some fun. It was absolutely magical meeting everyone, and watching their faces light up when they learned they could join in our movie!
