Idea: games before show

It’s been suggested that I try out some sort of collaborative game at the beginning – like have people bring laser pointers and race around a maze or something. The problem of course is 1) that people will then have these pesky laser pointers for the rest of the show, 2) would this be fun? How about trivia? Any other ideas? It would be nice to start off with a community thingy like this.

Last night

Last night was the first showing where we took a vote. We got 100 votes, so I was expecting this massive showing (I was worried!), but it ended up being the same attendence as last time. Whew! The funny thing about it was, no one at the show actually voted for what we watched! This wasn’t a bad thing cause everyone loved the show, but should voting be done at the showing itself somehow, since the only ones we want to vote are those that come? Maybe something cat-cool like the America’s Funniest Home Videos key entry units from the 80’s? And why did so many people vote and then not come?

New logo, new jingle?

My good friend Jono, the multi-talented artist-man, just made up some artwork and a jingle for the mobmov. What do you think?

Mobmov mailer mistake

I accidentally closed the window while I was sending out this latest e-mail, so I don’t know how many people actually got the mail. Did anyone not get the announcement? Man, I really need to upgrade this mailing software.

Voting implemented

I created a new script to allow people to vote for their favorite movie. I hope to open up voting once in awhile to see what people really want to watch. Unfortunately, in the course of testing it, I accidentally e-mailed 350 people with the word “testdtd” (or something like that). Whoops.

mobmov in a box

I’ve been getting a lot of e-mails from random people all over the world asking to start their own mobmovs. So I was thinking – what if I set up a “kit” which people could buy?

It would include all the components needed to start up your own system, including FM transmitter, cables with proper shielding, DVD player, inverter, etc. Along with all the mobmov titles, animations, banners, etc. And a tutorial on how to set it up, find the right projector, and list some of the tips I’ve learned along the way.

I figure I could buy these components in a fairly large quantity and thus save people a little money, plus all the time involved with figuring it out all themselves of course. I had about 50+ hours invested on the front-end to get it all going and I know in hindsight I would have been happy to buy a kit if someone had offered. Would people be interested in this sort of thing if I made it?

mobmov accused of plagiarism

as if it weren’t enough for gizmodo to call us a subset of the santa cruz drive-in (the nerve!), I just get this e-mail from a guy in germany accusing me of ripping off the idea from them and some other obscure website. I’d pass it off and move on, but it’s rather funny cause its so weird:

Now i would like to know if you have adopted the idea from some german website ( www.undergroundbattle.org ), or i its just that you copied the “Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive In”… – no offense ;D

I hate it when people say “no offense”! Then why did you make it?

ah-eiiii! we’re faaammmoouss!

The blog I read every day just ran an article about the mobile movie! Of course, their facts are a bit wrong (the mobmov was the first mobile movie of the sort they describe, not santa cruz – ehem!), but my goodness! That was so cool to see, so unexpected! To be listed next to the SC GDI is quite an honor.

214 members and growing as I watch. holy carp, this is going to blow up my server. but it will feel *so* good.

The mobmov as a franchise

Recently there’s been a lot of interest in starting up other mobmovs in other areas of the country. I just got an e-mail today from a guy in LA raring to go, and there have been e-mails from people in Minneapolis, San Diego, and Pittsburgh just this past week. I think it’s totally cool to hear that people want to set up their own and bring this thing into wider and wider circles! I think, the more the merrier, I’m happy to help them get going.

But what should new mobmovs be called? Obviously not “branches”… maybe “venues”… but there has to be something more interesting to call them. Ideas?

Looking back and ahead

Here we are, nearing the end of summer. I admit that I am saddened that I didn’t hold more events. This was a busy summer for me, and it would have been hard to run it with me gone. Maybe in the future we can diversify the equipment a little more so others can show mobmovs too.

I’m really excited how well the mobmov has done, how much interest it has generated. I can’t hardly believe that we’re almost up to 150 people on the mailing list! What started as a hair-brained idea from a tinkering geek, turned into something that people really enjoy and talk about. And I don’t even know them. It’s all really encouraging to see this progression.

It seems like yesterday that my friends Ray and Menzies joined me for the first mobmov (before it was the “mobmov”) in the Longs parking lot on University and San Pablo.

What lies in the future? Well, I’ll definitely be running it in the winter-time. It is such a blast to run a mobmov and meet all you cool people, it’s tough not to want to hold one every week! I’d like to get more organized about it in general, so people can somewhat count on a set time. I’m thinking of perhaps the first Thursday of every month, plus a flexible date I will determine during the rest of the month. I’d also like to bring the mobmov into other communities (such as SF) and look into running it at events.

Please e-mail with your comments, ideas, and hopes for the future!
